This concept has been around for as long as I can remember and is actually called "relevancy."
I'm about to do a very long lesson on relevancy, but for now, this is what you need to know:
- relevancy answers the question "does my website enter into the possibility of being in the results for a certain search term?"
- authority answers the question "WHERE does my website rank in the results during a search for a certain search term"
In the event those are confusing, let me explain how search engines work.
1. Someone searches for something
2. The search engine complies with every website that is relevant to those search words. So there are billions of websites, right? The search engines pull a list of all the pages that are RELEVANT for a certain search term. So now it knows which pages will rank (somewhere, not necessarily at the top), but now it has to sort them (who is 1st? Who is 2nd?).
3. The search engines rank them with authority
Now, if you are ready to have your mind blown, relevancy can occur when there is no pertinent content. In other words, you can get a site to appear in the search results for phrases that DO NOT APPEAR ON THE SITE. edit - content DOES help relevancy, but it's not the only thing. Use good content, regardless.If for no other reason than to help humans.
When you understand this, you understand that content doesn't matter. At all.
In other words, your boss has been watching too many YouTube videos by SEO gurus and probably doesn't understand relevancy, either.
